Garage Door Won’t Open in a Power Outage: What to Do

The exact steps to open a garage door by hand when the power is out, when to stop and call, and how to prepare before the next shutoff.

Short answer

Pull the red emergency release cord, then lift the door by hand, slowly. If it feels very heavy, won’t stay up or drops, stop and call: a spring may be broken. Openers installed in California since July 1, 2019 must have battery backup, so a newer unit should keep working in a garage door power outage.

What to do right now when the garage door will not open in a power outage

  1. Confirm the power is out at the opener’s outlet and your breaker panel. A tripped breaker looks like an outage.
  2. If your opener has battery backup, press the remote or wall control. Genie says a backup runs on limited power, so some features may not work, but the door should move.
  3. Find the red cord. Genie notes that openers have long been required to have a working emergency release cord. It hangs from the trolley on the rail above the door. Pull it once to disconnect the door from the opener.
  4. Lift the door by hand, slowly, with a firm grip and your body clear of the opening.
  5. Stop if anything feels wrong. If the door is very heavy, will not stay up, or one side lags, a spring or cable may be broken. Keep people and cars clear and call.

Opener manuals warn about releasing a door that is already open, because a weak or broken spring can let it drop. Check your manual for how to use the release safely.

Power shutoffs and outages in Carlsbad

San Diego Gas & Electric began Public Safety Power Shutoffs on October 2, 2026, in specific communities because of extreme heat and Santa Ana winds. Times of San Diego reported that more than 30 communities were affected, naming El Cajon and Poway as the largest cities and including Boulevard, Fallbrook, Julian, Lakeside, Ramona, Pauma and Valley Center. The communities named in the coverage we reviewed were inland and backcountry areas. In an earlier event, SDG&E warned customers in “select northern coastal communities” of a possible shutoff. High winds can also cause unplanned outages that are separate from planned shutoffs, according to Times of San Diego.

To see whether your address is in an alert area, check SDG&E directly. The garage door lesson is the same either way: know how to open the door by hand before you need to.

Prepare before the next outage

  • Find the red cord now and pull it once with the door closed, following your manual, so you know how it works.
  • Test the battery backup every six months. Genie says to cut power to the opener and confirm the door moves from the remote or wall control.
  • Check whether your opener has a backup at all. Openers installed in California since July 1, 2019 must, per SB 969.
  • Keep a flashlight and spare remote batteries near the door from the house.
  • If the garage is your only way in, know where your house key and a side-door key are.

When the power comes back

The door may stay disconnected from the opener. Follow your manual to re-engage the trolley, which on many openers means closing the door and running the opener or pulling the release handle toward the opener. If the opener still will not run, check the wall control lock button and the safety sensors, which are the two most common causes of a blinking opener, according to h2ouse. If a spring is the problem, call for garage door spring replacement Carlsbad.

Garage door power outage: your questions

How do I open my garage door when the power is out?

Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the door from the opener, then lift the door by hand slowly. If it is very heavy or will not stay up, stop and call, because a spring may be broken.

Why is my garage door heavy after I pull the release?

The springs carry the door’s weight. A very heavy door usually means a broken or weak spring, not an opener problem.

Do garage door openers have battery backup in California?

New ones must. Since July 1, 2019, residential openers installed in California must have a battery backup function designed to operate during an electrical outage.

How often should I test my battery backup?

Genie advises every six months.

How do I reconnect the opener after an outage?

Follow your opener’s manual. On many models you close the door and run the opener, or pull the release handle toward the opener, until the trolley latches again.

Did SDG&E shut off power in Carlsbad in October 2026?

Coverage of the October 2 to 5, 2026 shutoffs named inland and backcountry communities and did not list Carlsbad. Check SDG&E for your address, since outages can also be unplanned.
